iPhone is cool, but what about the other stuff?

January 10th, 2007 Uncategorized

Just like any tech geek in the world I eagerly awaited the latest Steve Jobs Keynote speech at Mac World Expo. I do not presently own an Apple computer, but have been seriously thinking of getting a MacBookPro 17″ model. The only issue is the cost and the unknown future releases of a new MacBookPro or other machine that is much better.

The MacExpo Keynotes and other Apple surprise announcements are great for marketing Apple products. Jobs is a master at creating buzz about great Apple products. The only problem I have is that with all of the unknown it is tough for a regular guy as myself to justify getting the latest Apple gear year after year. I received an Apple IPod Mini in Silver two years ago for Christmas. A few months back my battery died. Instead of shelling out $60 for a replacement which would mean getting a different refurbished model from Apple, I decided to replace my own battery.

I purchased a new replacement battery from the web which came with a handy mini screwdriver to help me crack open the iPod. The directions were super easy to follow. I replaced the battery, closed it up and thought everything was fine and dandy. The only problem was that the scroll wheel did not work. I opened it up to investigate and I found that in the one critical step of unplugging a connector, I fat fingered and sliced the connection between the click wheel and the motherboard. D’oh. Now my iPod is a paper weight.

True, I could easily upgrade to a Nano or something else. Maybe I would even get an iPhone when they come out in June. But my main issue with Apple is that the products change quickly and without notice. Upgrading or doing something simple like replacing a battery is not a primary consideration. True the Mac Geeks and peripheral Mac Geeks such as myself will shell out the cash, but this is one factor that really bugs me.

So the big news was that the iPhone was released. That product rightfully so took up most of the two hour MacWorldExpo Keynote address. No new MacBook Pros were released. No word on Leopard or new iLife or many other rumored products. This makes me a bit nervous in getting ready to shell out almost $3k for a new MacBookPro. What if I get it in a few months and Apple suddenly releases a new set of MacBookPros? What if the current set is not compatible with Leopard? Then I am worried that I would be stuck. I think I will eventually move and get a Mac at some point, but these surprise product releases make me feel like I’m playing poker with Steve Jobs. Should I go all in or pass?
