Divorce Italian Style
The brilliant movie Divorce Italian Style (1961) is the movie where America first got to know Marcello Mastroianni.
Divorce was illegal in Italy up until the 1970s or so. So there weren’t many options to end a marriage up until then.
Ferdinando Cefalú(Marcello Mastroianni) would love to unload his demanding, sex-starved, monumentally unappealing wife, Rosalia (Daniela Rocca), but he can’t take the legal means open to his American counterparts. Ferdinando can, however, kill off his wife and receive a light sentence…provided he catches the lady committing adultery. The trick now is to make his plate-of-potatoes spouse attractive enough so that some other man will accommodate Ferdinando by cuckolding him.
Turns out that the Italian legal system would probably give a light sentence to Ferdinando Cefalú even if he did not catch his wife commiting adultery.
Italian justice system has lots of problems, first of all the most time consuming legal processes in Europe and the uncertainty of punishment.
