Getting Real is Getting Free
Lots of people have been reading 37Signals book “Getting Real” - “Discover the smarter, saster way to build a successful web-based application”
I have been reading it and it makes quite a bit of sense. Some of the tips are counter-intuitive. When you are building a web based application it is easy to over think every detail. Sometimes it is best just to keep things simple, focus on the basics and build from there. Most successful web applications do not actually do that much. Some of the complexity is usually missed by then end user. Successful applications usually only have one way to do things, or just have simple functionality.
Getting Real is a pragmatic approach to building sites. The book is available for free online and is quite inexpensive for paper back or PDF versions.
There is no excuse for you not to read this book.
Prototype Documentation
Prototype is the default library for most of the popular javascript frameworks. Scriptaculous and Moo.fx are just a few who require the use of prototype. Documentation seems to be tough to find specifically for prototype. Luckily Agile Ajax lists some very good sources for
prototype documentation.

Ferrari Vs Dodge Viper
Check out this clip of a Ferrari and Dodge Viper racing on “Deadman’s Road” which gets its name from the sheer drop off cliffs. The race is not too fast until the Viper skids off the road and down the cliff. The driver survives, but this video smells fake.
First off, why do we not have a camera view of the Viper when he goes off the cliff? Why in of all places is a stationary camera placed exactly where the Viper goes off? The corner does not look tight enough to cause the Viper to go off the road. The sand may have caused this, but the clip looks too professional to be a simple accident.
