Science Does Not Need God. Or Does It?

February 6th, 2006

OK, I am biting the bullet and posting about religion. This is a bit odd for a site which posts random facts about Chuck Norris and Jack Bauer, and Humor seems to be one of the most popular tags. But the article that I linked to seems like a very elegant argument in the Intelligent Design debate. I don’t usually dicuss religion or politcs here as I think it is a waste of time, but I think that this is an article worth posting.

The Catholic Church lead by Pope Bendict 16th and previously by Pope John Paul 2nd has come out against Intelligent Design as a science. There is good reason for this argument, especially since the Catholic Church has been down the science vs. religion debate before with Galileo.

A great writeup can be found at Catholic.org where Jesuit Priest Father George V. Coyne argues against Intelligent Design in a very elegant way. The talk is titled ‘Science Does Not Need God. Or Does It? A Catholic Scientist Looks at Evolution’

Some interesting snippets of the talk:

How are we to interpret the scientific picture of life’s origins in terms of religious belief. Do we need God to explain this? Very succinctly my answer is no. In fact, to need God would be a very denial of God.

But the personal God I have described is also God, creator of the universe. It is unfortunate that, especially here in America, creationism has come to mean some fundamentalistic, literal, scientific interpretation of Genesis.

If they respect the results of modern science, religious believers must move away from the notion of a dictator God, a Newtonian God who made the universe as a watch that ticks along regularly.

One point that I find incongruent about the Intelligent Design theory is that it is more appropriate as a study in philosophy since it tries to explain the universe by an untestable set of theories. It is up to the obsever to make the connection with the complexity or Intelligent Design of objects than to actually scientifically test a theory by proving it false.
