How much to charge

December 16th, 2005

It is always a tough question when developing websites. How much do you charge? It is a question Astrochimp grapples with every time a new website comes on the radar. Sometimes you get burned, other times it works out well, but it is a guessing game more often than it has to be. I would always struggle with the question of fixed -proce vs. hourly rates. Hourly rates are better especially when the the project is not fully spec’d out and the customer needs an estimate. It helps to contain scope-creep in a project because a customer knows that they will have to pay more when they expand the scope of the project.

Fixed-price are beneficial when you have a known project scope. You have to diligent to keep within that scope and make sure you allow a buffer in the price for scope-creep. Creative Guy has a solid and practical breakdown of how much to charge beased on an hourly rate.
