10 Tips Rules Web Starups

November 28th, 2005 Uncategorized

Web 2.0 is the buzzword, the economy is doing well, so the feeling of “I can do anything” is in the air. Lots of articles on starting a startup, tips for startups etc. They all make sense, but these tips from evhead seem to get closer to what Web 2.0 might be about. I think that the ultimate exampleof We 2.0-ness comes from Flickr.

New Design Gets Noticed

November 22nd, 2005 Websites

The new design is quickly getting noticed. I was looking at my statistics using Google Analytics and I noticed referrers coming from both CSS Mania and Screenspire. I visit these sites everyday, but somehow missed Astrochimp getting posted until today. I am a big fan of both sites as they showcase some truly outstanding webdesign. I feel like I don’t deserve to be included so quickly, but thanks for noticing!

Travel..What is your excuse

November 17th, 2005 Uncategorized

I am reading the traveling adventures of Jason Kottke in Bankok and Hong Kong. In the notes I cam across this tip:

[7] To those who say they can’t afford to travel, I say to you: stop making excuses. If you’ve got the income and leisure time to be spending time reading this blog, are sufficiently motivated, and make it a priority in your life[8], you can certainly afford it. The most costly item is the plane ticket, but if you watch for deals and are flexible in where you want to visit (maybe you go to Brazil instead of Thailand), you can get over here for less than you might think. And once you’re here, you can get by on $20 a day, including lodging. Travel is cheaper here as well, buses and trains are always an option, and there are several low-cost airlines that serve the region. It requires a little effort and intrepidity, but low-cost international travel can be done.

I agree 100% with this thought. I was not born in the US (but am now an American Citizen) so I have extensive ties with relatives in Italy. I grew up traveling often, mostly to Italy to see all of my relatives. Once I was older, I kept on traveling to Italy and other European destinations. I was lucky enough to get to go to Hawaii for my honeymoon too.

I’ve met several folks in my life who have not traveled abroad. Usually they either can’t find the time, or think the cost is outrageous. I have to say it is not. You can go to many places where the largest cost will be your airline ticket. Once you arrive, you will find that many countries are very accessable and you can easily find quality accomodations for a low price.

I plan on making a few trips in the coming years. One plan is to go to Italy again and visit relatives there while enoying the sunny beaches. I would also like to go to Japan and Hong Kong to be out of my element and get to experience how the other side of the world lives. Kottke’s adventures are making me think of doing this much sooner.

Call Tom Green

November 15th, 2005 Websites

Tom Green formerly of MTV fame who was the inspiration of Jackass and other shows now has a blog. A few days ago he posted his phone number and is now inundated with calls.
Tom’s site features almost daily video blogs, one was of Tom simply annoying his dog which did not look all that interested. Anyway, drop a line to Tom yourself by visiting his web log.

Flickrization of Yahoo

November 15th, 2005 Websites

According to Yahoo’s Jerry Yang, Flickr is where the Web is heading. A photos site that lets users share their pics with anyone and use a tagging system to enable the photos to be searchable is changing Yahoo.

PHP Control Structures

This is not “new” (Wordpress makes use of these) but not as well know. PHP offers alternative control structures where you can forego curly braces.

Upsidedown Trees?

November 9th, 2005 Uncategorized

Upside-down Xmas Trees seem to be thenewest fad. They primarily help folks put more presents under the tree, and show off your ornaments better. Hammacher Schlemmer says that the tree is “Evoking a 12th Century Central European tradition of hanging a tree from the ceiling at Christmas”. Some may see this as a pagan ritual or a way to increase Holiday Xmas consumption by allowing more presents to be placed below the tree. Whatever your take, you can get your tree from Hammacher Schlemmer.
I will stick with the ol’ natural trees.

November 2nd, 2005 Uncategorized

Yahoo hits back at Google with their own extended version of maps. A few noticable differences between Google Maps and Yahoo are:
Google Maps use AJAX, Yahoo use Flash
Google has satellite, hybrid and map view, Yahoo only has map view.
